1,1-Diphenoxy-2-(phenylsulfonyl)cyclopropane as a furan annulating agent

Reactions of the lithio derivative 2 derived from 1,1-diphenoxy-2-(phenylsulfonyl)cyclo-propane (1) with both acyl chlorides and acyl imidazoles yielded dihydrofurans 5 which could be transformed to the corresponding furans 6 by treatment with a catalytic amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid.
