الملخص:Background: Physicians profession are required to develop science in accordance with the progress of time. Self-directed learning (SDL) ability is required to formation lifelong learners. Several studies in other countries found that the problem-based learning (PBL) can enhance the capabilities of SDL. It is need to know how the results of the application of PBL in Indonesia in its efforts to establish SDL. Methods: This study used a cross sectional study design. Research subjects were students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) medical faculty from three study program. The questionnaires used was a student perceptions of PBL from aspect SPICES questionnaire, SDLRS questionnaire, and the IMI questionnaire. Results: Total 451 students (86.07 %) were willing to complete the questionnaires. Pearson correlation on perception of PBL relationship with SDL is 0.341. Pearson correlation on perception of the PBL relationship with intrinsic motivation is 0.382, whereas Pearson correlation intrinsic motivation relationship with SDL is 0.234. Pearson correlation on perception of PBL relationship with SDL increased in the group of high school students from outside the island of Java (r = 0.355), and the group of students who have no experience in independent/active learning before (r = 0.396) . Conclusions: The relationship between students' perceptions of PBL with SDL has a very weak. SMA origin and experience in self/active learning in high school can improve those relationships. Intrinsic motivation as mediator variables not been analyze because relationship between perception of PBL with SDL has a very weak.
