الملخص: | Background: Physicians profession are required to develop science in
accordance with the progress of time. Self-directed learning (SDL) ability is
required to formation lifelong learners. Several studies in other countries
found that the problem-based learning (PBL) can enhance the capabilities
of SDL. It is need to know how the results of the application of PBL in
Indonesia in its efforts to establish SDL.

subjects were students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) medical faculty
from three study program. The questionnaires used was a student
perceptions of PBL from aspect SPICES questionnaire, SDLRS
questionnaire, and the IMI questionnaire.
Results: Total 451 students (86.07 %) were willing to complete the
questionnaires. Pearson correlation on perception of PBL relationship with
SDL is 0.341. Pearson correlation on perception of the PBL relationship
with intrinsic motivation is 0.382, whereas Pearson correlation intrinsic
motivation relationship with SDL is 0.234. Pearson correlation on
perception of PBL relationship with SDL increased in the group of high
school students from outside the island of Java (r = 0.355), and the group
of students who have no experience in independent/active learning before
(r = 0.396) .
Conclusions: The relationship between students' perceptions of PBL with
SDL has a very weak. SMA origin and experience in self/active learning in
high school can improve those relationships. Intrinsic motivation as
mediator variables not been analyze because relationship between
