總結:This undergraduate study tested the effect of eggplant (Solanum melongena) peel extract in alcohol-induced liver damage of male albino rat (Rattus norvegicus). This study utilized the potential of eggplant peel in treating liver damage by the action of its antioxidant, the nasunin. Nasunin is found on eggplant peel as shown by its vibrant purple color. It has been shown that it protects cell membranes from exogenous damage (i.e introduction of alcohol) by scavenging free radicals and toxic reactive oxygen species. Lambanog by 80 proof alcohol was used in damaging the liver of test organisms. It was administered to 27 albino rats. The test organisms were divided into four groups according to their respective treatments. The first group was the negative control group (T0) which was given normal saline solution (NSS) only; this group served as cross reference to the other group. The second group or the hepatotoxic group (T1) was only given lambanog and NSS. The third group (T2) was given 75% eggplant extract and lambanog while the fourth (T3) was given 95% eggplant extract and lambanog. The liver enzymes namely Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were used as liver markers to determine whether liver damage is present or not. Upon its elevation, liver damage is present and its decrease can relatively show therapeutic effect. According the results, eggplant peel extract had a therapeutic effect against liver damage because it was able to lower the enzymes nearly to the values of the negative control group in relation to its normal values. Between the two treatments, the 95 % concentration was most effective in treating liver damage as shown by greater amount of decrease of liver enzymes.
