ABSTRACT V The aims of this activity are to change the farmer's behavior in the traditional rearing into semi intensive one of native chickens with low feed cost in order to increase their income. The activities were carried out at Banjaroyo, Kalibawang, Kulon Progo and Kalibening, Kalasan, Sleman. The program was started by giving an extension, delivering the loan of chickens, guiding and monitoring during six months. Component of native chickens loan were: 10 day old native chickens, vaccine of New Castle Disease, 3 kg of starter feed and 5 kg of rice polishing. The farmers were obliged to continue feeding with mixture of rice polishing and kitchen waste. After six months, the farmers had to payback the loan of 40% from the total body weight in the form of chickens. Evaluation of the activity was conducted by measuring growth and mortality of native chickens and the increase of the farmers' income. When the farmers first receiving native chickens loan showed that chicken body weight (BB) at 8 weeks was 375,57g and total mortality 20 chickens (14,28%) for Kalibening, and 390,42g of BB and total mortality 17 chickens (12,14%) for Banjaroyo. At the second phase of the loan, the farmers receive native chickens with BB at 5 weeks was 286,90g and total mortality 5 chickens (4,76%) for Kalibening and for Banjaroyo BB was 269,10g and total mortality 10 chickens (10,00%). It can be concluded that farmers at Kalibening and Banjaroyo had no significant differences in rearing the chickens as it had not any significant differences on growth and mortality rate of native chickens.
