الملخص: | Appropriate relaxation factors is essential for succesful numerical flow computation. In flow simulation problems, due to their non-linear characteristic, it is common practice to introduce under-relaxation factors to avoid the iteration process from diverging. In the design process that make use CFD â�� where many computations should be done for every single design changes â�� it is important to optimize under-relaxation factors prior to the design stage. Unfortunately, there is no rule on determining optimum value.
In this paper, an effort had been made to determine optimum values of under-relaxation factor for predicting.11ow in a rotating centrifugal pump impeler. In this case, optimum under-relaxation for pressure, momentum, and turbulence calculation will be determined by a Response Surface Methodology (RSM), instead of trial-and-error strategy. The dependent variable in this study is the number of iteration to converge, and the independent variables (or factors) are under-relaxation factors for pressure, momentum, and turbulence.
The results of the study show that convergence rate is determined mainly by momentum and turbulence under-relaxation factors. The optimum values are 0.90 for momentum and 0.83 for turbulence. For pressure, it could be set safely to 0.20 to avoid divergence. This optimum settings results in about fifty percent less iteration number compared to the default one.
