الملخص: | The sawmill industries in Indonesia still produce a lot of biomass waste,
which is not fully utilized yet. In order to reduce the volume of the waste, one of
the efforts that can be done is processing the waste into particleboard. The
particleboard industries are mainly use formaldehyde-based adhesives which is
harmful and potentially risky to the human�s health. Citric acid is an organic
material that can be act as an natural binding agent for environmentally - friendly
particleboard. The addition of sucrose is very effective to improve the physical
properties of particleboard. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the amount
of citric acid-sucrose and its composition on physical and mechanical properties
of sengon particleboards.
This study used completely randomized design with two different factors,
namely the amount of adhesive (7.5% wt, and 15% wt based on weight of dried
particles) and the composition of citric acid: sucrose (0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75 : 25
and 100:0). Particleboards were hot pressed at 2000C, specific pressure of 3.6
MPa for 10 min and a target density of 0.9 g/cm3. The physical and mechanical
properties of particleboards were tested based on JIS A 5908-2003 standards, such
as water content, density, thickness development, water absorption, surface
roughness, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond strength.
Data results were analyzed using SPSS test and further tested using HSD
(Honestly Significant Difference) test of Tukey at level 99% and 95%.
The results showed that the interaction factor between amount and
composition adhesive only affected significantly on modulus of rupture. The
addition of citric acid and sucrose significantly affected on decrease in water
content, water absorption, thickness swelling as well as, increase in the value of
density, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bond strength.
Adhesive composition significantly affected on the internal bond strength. The
highest properties of sengon particleboard were obtained 15 wt% amount adhesive
with the composition adhesive of citric acid and sucrose 25 : 75 wt% and 50 : 50
wt%, i.e. 5.06 to 5.66% moisture content |
