The synthesis was done by a coprecipitation method of Mg(NO3)2 and Al(NO3)3 at pH 11 with Mg2+/Al3+ molar ratio (2 : 1). The effect of calcination on the adsorption ability was studied by first calcinating the UMHT at temperature 450 °C to form calcinized UMHT (CUMHT). The synthesized UMHT and CUMHT were characterized using Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray Diffration (XRD). The application of UMHT and CUMHT as adsorbents of [AuCl4]- was studied by examining the effect of pH, adsorption kinetics and isotherm. Desorption of [AuCl4]- from UMHT and CUMHT was performed to analyze the possibility to recover [AuCl4]-. The result showed that the distribution of magnetite on hydrotalcite structure changed the Mg/Al-NO3 hydrotalcite to have not only a good adsorption ability but also magnetic properties so that the separation process was able to be done easily by employing external magnetic field. The adsorption of [AuCl4]- by both UMHT and CUMHT was optimum at pH 3, followed the pseudo-second order adsorption kinetics with adsortion rate constant 0.007 g/mg minute for UMHT and 0.003 g/mg minute for CUMHT. The adsorption capacity of UMHT for [AuCl4]- as determined according to Langmuir isoterm model was 71.43 mg/g and that of CUMHT as determined according to Freundlich isoterm model was 11.65 mg/g. Calcination treatment of UMHT could destroy the UMHT structure and was unable to enhance the adsorption capacity.
