Confessions of a Mask is a novel written by Yukio Mishima, one of the most outstanding Japanese writers. It tells about the inner journey of a lonely boy named Kochan, who deals with his homosexuality since he was still a child. Along with his sado-masochistic fantasy, he tries to find the way for his acceptance of his homosexuality. The study focuses on the main character in the novel in relation with his homosexuality concealment and its impact to his personality development. The intrinsic approach is used to analyze the intrinsic elements of the novel, namely character and setting, as the starting point, in order to give a deeper understanding of the story. George Herbert Mead's sociological theory and Abraham Harold Maslow's theory of humanistic are applied as well, as the approaches to analyze social interaction and psychological change of the main character.
