The issue often takes place on women in society and how they struggle for their position in male dominated system. Japan is one of the supporter countries that supports the ideology of patriarchy in its social system, which makes the Japanese women are subjected to its family system and gender roles. As pictured in Yukio Mishima's After the Banquet, a Japanese woman named Kazu is having trouble in aiming her goal of life as a part of Japanese society in particular in the post World War II. Her goal of life is described as becoming wife and at the same time as a career woman. After the Banquet is a fascinating look at love and politics. Kazu is head-strong, wealthy and not ashamed to use her money to get what she desires. Noguchi, a few years older than her, is idealistic and stubborn, wanting to stick to win the election on his own. Along with that clash, they are also tom between the modem Japanese woman and the traditional role of the Japanese wife. Kazu wants to be out and about, aiding her husband any way she can; Noguchi is determined to keep her out of politics, at one point even forbidding her to leave the house. Karen Homey's Sociocultural Theory of Personality is used to analyze the problem that Kazu finds in her attempt which mainly comes from the cultural forces that encouraged her to be dependent on men for love, prestige, wealth, care, and protection.
