The study reveals that the imagining of Thailand is part of the construction of farang identities, carried out through the three steps of the traditional travel novel plot: the departure of the protagonist/narrator—mostly male in this case—from his homeland, his entry into Thailand, and his return to the native country. Besides, this construction is also performed through the relationship between farangs and Thai bar girls as lovers that sexual relationships are considered in two different manners: objectively as part of a profitable profession by the Thai bar girl characters and emotionally as acts of romantic love by their farang counterparts. Moreover, farang identities are variously formed through the different spatial sections of Thailand being imagined. In the space of bars in the red-light zone, it is found that the farang characters identify themselves as "tourists" directly looking for pleasure and entertainment whereas the areas of tourists’ lodgings serve as sites of "farang communities," where these people gather to share their experiences and hang out in the daytime. Other types of non-red-light spaces found in the novels studied are the Thai girl characters’ homelands in which their farang lovers are in the positions of "learners"; sites of tourist attractions where the farang characters perform their "happy traveler" roles; and certain spaces of Bangkok or Thailand that are represented as "dangerous" places. วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งที่จะศึกษาอัตลักษณ์"ฝรั่ง" และการสร้างจินตนาการเรื่องเมืองไทยในนวนิยายตะวันตกร่วมสมัยจำนวน 8 เรื่อง จากการศึกษาพบว่าการสร้างจินตนาการเรื่องเมืองไทยอันเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ "ฝรั่ง" โดยผ่านกลวิธีการประพันธ์ที่ใช้โครงเรื่องเป็น 3 ช่วง คือ ช่วงแรก ตัวละครเอกชาย "ฝรั่ง" ต้องเดินทางออกจากบ้านเกิดด้วยสาเหตุต่างๆ ช่วงที่สอง ตัวละครต้องเผชิญกับสิ่งแปลกใหม่ เพื่อสื่อให้เห็นถึงการ "ปรับเปลี่ยน" ของตัวละคร และช่วงที่สาม เป็นการตัดสินใจของตัวละครหลังจากการเดินทาง สำหรับการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ "ฝรั่ง" ที่ผ่านความสัมพันธ์ของตัวละครที่เป็น "คู่รัก" ระหว่างผู้ชาย "ฝรั่ง" และผู้หญิงบาร์ ซึ่งเป็นความสัมพันธ์ที่พัฒนามาจากการซื้อและขายบริการภายใต้พื้นที่ "red light zone" ซึ่งสตรีไทยมักมองผู้ชาย "ฝรั่ง" เป็นเพียงแหล่งรายได้และการให้บริการต่างๆ เป็นเพียงแค่หน้าที่ แต่ผู้ชายฝรั่งกลับมองเป็นความ"รัก" ส่วนการสร้างจินตนาการเรื่องพื้นที่ของเมืองไทยจะใช้พื้นที่ "red light zone" ผ่านบาร์ที่มีตัวละครผู้ชาย"ฝรั่ง" ใช้เป็นพื้นที่ในการแสวงหา "ความสุขและความบันเทิง" ยามค่ำคืน และพื้นที่ของสถานที่พักจะถูกใช้เป็น "ชุมชนฝรั่ง" เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์และดำเนินชีวิตในตอนกลางวัน นอกจากนี้พื้นที่ภายนอกพื้นที่ "red light zone" จะใช้บ้านเกิดของหญิงไทยให้เป็นพื้นที่สำหรับผู้ชาย"ฝรั่ง"ได้เป็น"ผู้เรียนรู้" สิ่งต่างๆ พื้นที่ที่เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวถูกใช้เป็นสถานที่ "พักผ่อน" และยังมีพื้นที่ของกรุงเทพมหานครหรือเมืองไทยซึ่งถูกสร้างให้เป็นพื้นที่ "อันตราย" ซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยความวุ่นวายและอาชญากรรม จินตนาการ นวนิยายอเมริกัน นวนิยายอังกฤษ นวนิยายไทย Imagination American fiction English fiction Thai fiction ชุติมา ประกาศวุฒิสาร https://digiverse.chula.ac.th/digital/file_upload/biblio/cover/55499.jpg |
