الملخص: | The objective of this thesis is to examine the causes of Thailand s decision to allying herself with the United States in the Korean War in 1950, which occurred in the period of Phibun Songram Government. In the context of the Cold War and bipolar system, the decision implied that Thailand was moving toward the West. It also marked the beginning of a close alliance between Thailand and the United States. Several types of aids from the United States to Thailand began or increased substantially right after that. This study utilized several selected theories of International Relations together with relevant literatures that explained Thailand s decision. The method of this study is a historical approach, using documentary research and interviewing the persons involved in the Korean War. The study found that the alliance between Thailand and the United States in Korean War was not based only on mutual or collective security on the desire to bring the United States to support and protect Thailand from the communist threat, as suggested by most literatures before the decade of 1990. It found that allying with the United States had enhanced the interest of Phibun regime, namely, depressing threat from the domestic politics; supporting the economic interest of other military leaders, and enhanced the security of the country as a whole. This finding is more compatible with literatures after 1990 s, and also in accordance with the internal factor explanation by Michael N. Barnett and Jack S. Levy. |
