Summary:In this work, the electrochemical technique was applied to determine the polarization curves of AISI 316L stainless steels in the aqueous solutions containing chloride 0, 50, 500 and 5000 ppm, and those of two carbon manganese steels in the aqueous solutions containing chloride 0, 200, 400 and 600 ppm in the pH ranges 2-12 and at 25 C. From the polarization curves, the corrosion parameters were evaluated to draw the Pourbaix or potential-pH diagrams of those steels. The diagrams showed several states of the tested steels; the immunity, the general or pitting corrosions, and the passivation. In this work, the Pourbaix diagram of carbon manganese steel in water exhibits the states of the steel similar to that obtained in the Pourbaix diagram of pure iron in water by the thermodynamics calculation. When the chloride contents in the aqueous solution increases, the passivation condition in the Pourbaix diagrams of the tested steels decreases. The corrosion mechanism of the tested steels was also discussed.
