ABSTRACT Surakarta has many cultural heritages from the Islamic Mataram Period, especially related with the coming of the Westerns. Islamic Mataram heritage represented by Kasunanan Surakarta palace and the coming of the Westerns was represented by many colonial buildings. A site in Surakarta which preserves cultural product of those eras is Jebres railway station and its surroundings. From this cultural heritage, it can be seen interesting potential, mainly, on the varieties and function of the building, e.g.: dwelling house, worshipping, education, and transport facilities. This study intends to identify the characteristic of cultural resources in Jebres area which is vulnerable to the changes due to city development. The research was performed by collecting archeological data which existed in Jebres railway station and its surroundings. Other data including governmental policy documents, institutional data (country and sub-district), basic and thematic maps, historical data ("babad"), and related study. result. After they were collected, then field survey was performed including observing the site, recording he building's condition, taking picture, and plotting historical buildings on the basic map. Afterwards, the data was presented via photographs and distribution maps of potentials existing in that cultural area. The result of analysis showed that Jebres has significances as an identity of the historical city of Surakarta. Therefore, a management strategy is needed for an optimal preservation effort.
