Summary: | Global warming is a direct impact of increased of carbondioxide (CO2) gas
emission in the atmosphere. One knwon as the source of CO2 gas emissions is
caused by burning material containing the element of carbon (fossil fuel
combustion) of industry. One attempt to reduce CO2 gas emission levels in the
atmosphere is to determine the potential amount of CO2 absorption by forests or
stands. To find out how much CO2 absorption, needs a head count of forest carbon
stocks. This study aims to calculate the carbon storage and CO2 gas absorption at
Tabo-Tabo Teaching Forest and at the reclamation area of PT. Semen Tonasa.
The method used in this study is a non-destructive method to estimate carbon
stands. The analysis showed that the amount of carbon stored in biomass of Tabo-
Tabo Teaching Forest is 14.77 tons/ha/year or equal to 54.21 tons/ha/year of CO2
absorption. Based on the effective area of Tabo-Tabo Teaching Forest which is
595.94 ha, the total amount of CO2 absorption at Tabo-Tabo Teaching Forest is
equal to 32292.53 tons/year or 0.91% of the annual CO2 gas emissions of PT.
Semen Tonasa which is 3,530,248.35 tons/year. Carbon stored in the biomass of
stands in the reclamation area of PT. Semen Tonasa is 11.18 tons/ha/year or equal
to 41.03 tons/ha/year of CO2 absorption. Based on the total area of reclamation
which is 38 ha, the amount of CO2 absorption of PT. Semen Tonasa is 1559.22
tons/year or 0.044% of the annual CO2 gas emissions of PT. Semen Tonasa.
Based on these results, the total area of stands needed to absorb the CO2 gas
emission of PT. Semen Tonasa is 86093.40 ha.
Each type of plant will produce a different amount of biomass. The
selection of plants to be important to increase the absorption of CO2. Types of
plants that contain large biomass will have a high absorption rate of CO2. Five
types of plants that contain the highest biomass at Tabo-Tabo Teaching Forest are
Vitex pubescens, Pterocarpus indicus, Dracontomelon dao, and Tectona grandi,
and Vitex copassus. While in the reclamation area of PT. Semen Tonasa, plant
species that have the highest absorption for CO2 are Gmelina arborea, Albizia
falcataria, Tectona grandis, Samanea saman, and Swietenia mahogany. |
