Summary:Poor control of blood glucose as a risk factor for ischemic stroke is still controversial. Glycohemoglobin levels (HbA1c) is associated with blood glucose control. This study aims to determine the high HbA1c levels as a risk factor for acute ischemic stroke. The method of this study was cross-sectional, laboratory HbA1C checked on all patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke and non-ischemic stroke in consecutive sampling. The relationship between HbA1c levels and risk factors with ischemic stroke were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test on bivariate analysis, followed by multivariate analysis with logistic regression. Total subjects that match to the inclusion and exclusion criteria were 82 patients, comprised of 41 patients with ischemic stroke and 41 patients with nonischemic stroke. HbA1c�6,5% levels found in 21 patients (51.2%) with ischemic stroke and 3 patients (7.3%) non ischemic stroke. HbA1c�6,5% prevalence of risk of ischemic stroke were 7.56 times compared to patients with HbA1c, 6.5% (p = 0.001) in the bivariate analysis. Other variables that were statistically significant as a risk factor for ischemic stroke is a history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Multivariate analysis showed HbA1c�6,5% is not an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke (p = 0.11), with OR 4.32 (95% CI 0.70 to 26.51). Conclusions This study is the HbA1c leve�ls 6.5% increase the likelihood of acute ischemic stroke by 7.56 times compared to lower HbA1c, but did not reach statistically significant as a risk factor for ischemic stroke.
