Background: Chemotherapy is one of the four modalities (surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and biotherapy) used as a therapy for cancer patients. Chemotherapy given to cancer patients may have harmful side effects and cause discomfort. Lavender aromatherapy can be taken as an option to improve the comfort of the patient in managing the side effects of chemotherapy. Lavender is known to have many benefits, namely the antiemetic effect, calming, relaxing resulting in easier communication/sharing. Objective: This research is to identify effects of lavender aromatherapy on the comfort level of patients receiving chemotherapy at RSUP Dr. Sardjito. Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental research using pre-test post-test with control group design. It was conducted at RSUP Dr. Sardjito on March-July 2014. The samples included 60 respondents consisting of 30 respondents of treatment group and 30 respondents of control group. This research employed an instrument, namely Hospice Comfort Questionnaire (Patient) adopted from Kolcaba (2006). Data were analyzed using paired t test and independent t-test. Results: There were no significant differences in the mean scores of comfort from pre-test to post-test in the intervention group (p = 0.12) and the control group (p = 0.32). Conclusion: Lavender aromatherapy does not have significant effects on the comfort level of patients receiving chemotherapy at RSUP Dr. Sardjito.
