Description
Summary:Aging is a process of deterioration on tissue ability to maintain its normal structure and functions. Aging process will occur in all organs, and skin is no exception. Skin is the widest organ with many important functions. Aging give rise to skin wrinkles, slacken and loose of its elasticity. These conditions occur due to changes in the part of the skin especially in the dermis that contains both collagen and elastic fiber, either caused by intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Currently, information about aging of animal skin especially dogs is only limited. This research aims to see the visualization of collagen and elastic fiber on young and old dogs. There are six dogs, aged less than six months and six dogs aged more than five years old used in this research. Biopsy is performed to take 2x2x0.5 cm3 of the dog skin for histology sample preparation by means of Mallory stain for collagen fiber and Verhoeffs Elastic Fiber (Van Gieson) stain for elastic fiber. Examination of the collagen and elastic fiber of the young and old dogs are performed using compound light microscope. The collagen density and the amount of elastic fiber are counted in five framings randomly selected with 400 times magnification. Result shows there are significant differences (P<0.05) between density of collagen fiber and elastic fiber on young and old dog skin. The result indicates deterioration of collagen density and increasing number of elastic fiber on old skin. Summarized to be the effect of aging process in the skin. Key words: aging, skin, collagen fiber, elastic fiber.
