This research focuses on Haji�s responds toward urban modernity in Bandung in the early 20th century. It covers from 1906 to 1930s. The study reveals a concept of middle class santri bearing on economic activities in a modernizing city, namely Bandung. The research belongs to social history whose focus on haji as a middle class santri in urban Bandung. It restrains to merely focus on haji in commercial sectors, mostly batik and wooden goods. Two groups of haji have special attention in this research namely Saudagar Bandung and Kancana Saparakanca. Saudagar Bandung is a representation of migrant in origin
