الملخص:Background Breastmilk contains some elements that are thought to protect infants from developing allergic disease and allergen sensitization. The prevalence of asthma has increased dramatically within the last two decades. Several studies have been conducted to identify possible protective factors against asthma, including breastmilk. Protective effect of breastfeeding against asthma remained inconsistent among different studies. However, there is no data yet about association between breastfeeding and protection against asthma in Indonesia. Objective to investigate the association between breastfeeding and the development of childhood asthma. Method We conducted a case-control study in Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta. Data were collected by interview using questionnaire. Inclusion criteria of case group were all children with asthma (based on criteria of PNAA, 2004). Inclusion criteria of control group were all children who do not have asthma. We analyzed the data using Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression. Result There were 96 children consisting of 48 asthmatic and 48 non asthmatic subjects included in this study. We found that breastfeeding duration less than 1 years was a significant risk factor for developing asthma (OR 3,05 (CI 95% 1,11- 8,37)
